Don't ask, don't tell

I was fuelling up on my way to the usual hiking meet-up when I saw Jenn cruise past. That was odd, because I’d just said goodbye to her at home five minutes earlier, and she was planning on marking students’ essays all weekend.

I thought it would be funny to surprise her. We had just been gloating to each other about how, after seven years of marriage, our lives were so stable and so safe, and how we were so dependable for each other.

“Even,” she said, scanning her eyes sideways out their corners at me where we laid in our big white bed with our mugs and phones, “and don’t take this the wrong way.” She grinned and playfully bit the tip of her tongue between her gleaming white teeth. A long bright shard of Saturday morning sunlight laid across her body. She was wearing a silken teddy camisole, white and pure and trimmed in the lightest scalloped lace. She was sunken into the flotilla of pillows with her knees up, one leg crossed at the ankle over the knee of the other, leaving her foot to dangle and her toes to curl and release. “But very predictable too.”

I rolled over sideways toward her and ran my hand over her silk-covered stomach and up further, over the edge of her ribs, and up the underside of her breasts. “I suppose you’re going to tell me now that predictability is a good thing.”

She squealed and rolled over to face me closely. “But it is!” she said, puffing her lips out and placing an envelope-sealing kiss on the tip of my nose. She reached down between my legs and pressed her cupped palm over my groin. “It’s definitely the most underrated aspect of a sexy man,” she cooed. She rolled her body over on top of mine and pressed her hips down against mine and gasped against my ear. “And it turns me on so much . . . “ she groaned as she curled her spine and dragged the front of the crotch of her thin camisole up and down over my stiffening erection. She tittered, too. Making me hard always surprised and amused her, every time.

I jumped in my car and went out the gas station the same way I came in. I snickered when I saw her get caught by the next red light. Wherever she was going, she didn’t tell me about it before, and she certainly didn’t text me anything that came up, either. It wasn’t on her way to her college office and nor was it the direction to her sisters or her parents.

“Boy oh boy,” I grinned and shook my head. “You gonna have some ’splainin’ to do, girlfriend!” I laughed spying the back of her head through the windows of the car between us. Hadn’t we just been talking about how good predictability was?

I stayed back cruising along the boulevard so she wouldn’t notice my car, but stayed close enough that I didn’t lose her.
